Gaza: a health crisis for generations to come (2)
JVL Introduction
This short overview was written a few days before the ceasefire and outlines some of the health problems in Gaza. These include the 42,000 with life changing injuries, including c 5,000 who have lost at least one limb as well as pregnant women giving birth without support, often delivering prematurely and, of course, the psychological impact of two years of bombardment, displacement, starvation and loss. These needs will be there with the ceasefire, which we all hope will hold and stop more horrors so that it becomes possible for the people to start to rebuild – themselves and their homes and beighbourhoods.
While some have now been able to return to the north of Gaza, usually to devastation, the people of Gaza are still unable to access 50% of the Strip and this is another way that, even without bombs, rebuilding, let alone healing is stymied by Israel’s determination to remain in control and by the collusion of so many countries.
