Erasing truth in Ramallah

JVL Introduction

Israel is erasing truth from the river to the sea.

It is, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, responsible for the deaths of at least 116 journalists and media workers among more than 42,000 killed since the war began, “making it the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.” Their database provides exhaustive information about those killed.

CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna in New York said, “Every time a journalist is killed, injured, arrested, or forced to go to exile, we lose fragments of the truth. Those responsible for these casualties face dual trials: one under international law and another before history’s unforgiving gaze.”

The Committee has condemned Israel’s raid on Al-Jazeera’s Ramallah bureau, ejecting the staff and imposing a 45-day closure.

We reproduce below Al-Jazeera’s own report which includes links to the kind of journalism the Israelis are determined to  crush. See this link for the agency’s rolling news about the war.

  • Just imagine that Russia had done this to a Western media office in Ukraine or Russia itself or had gone out of its way to target not only journalists but their families too. The air would be thick with denunciations.

The conclusions we should draw is that the democratic rights we enjoy under this decaying neo-liberal capitalism are fading and that if we don’t fight back inside the belly of the beast we will wake up with no freedoms left.

The raid on Sarah Wilkinson my armed masked police without a warrant and the appalling detention of Richard Medhurst are just an inkling of things to come.

I was treated extremely well in comparison when I was arrested just b4 Xmas. It makes me think that we need to construct a broad alliance of civil liberty organisations, unions and activists to push back at the continuing threat to democratic rights that Starmer’s regime represents.

Because it is a regime. It has no popular mandate in itself or for these actions.

  • Tony Greenstein is right of course. Unfortunately however the Starmer regime is caught in a pincer movement, with their other flank under seriously concerted attack from the “patriots”, the “two tier policing” propagandists and the all-year-round poppy brigade.
