Creating the Gaza Concentration Camp (and then bombing it)

JVL Introduction

There are few punches pulled in this piece. Israel seems now to be wanting to displace more and more Palestinians into every reducing areas of Gaza. We need to keep reminding people that Israel broke the ceasefire – again and again – even during the two months when the massive bombardments stalled. Hamas kept to the agreement and had been trying to get the negotiations started for Phase 2 but Israel refused. It changed the terms and then Hamas agreed again to the new terms and then Israel changed them again. All but a very small number of the Israeli hostages were released during negotiated ceasefires, in December 2023 and again in January and February 2025. One might even think that Israel’s leaders do not want a ceasefire, do not care about the Israeli hostages who, of course, deserve to be freed; given Trump’s pronouncements, one might think the far right in Israel is further emboldened to create a concentration camp. The area was referred to as a prison camp many years ago by then Tory Leader David Cameron, what is happening now is a million times worse.  Meanwhile Israel’s leaders continue to talk nonsense about “voluntary evacuation”.  Below are just some of the reasons why it will not work.

Israel’s latest vision for Gaza has a name: Concentration camp

Unable to immediately expel Gazans en masse, Israel seems intent on forcing them into a confined zone — and letting starvation and desperation do the rest.

  • The growing resistance to serving in the IDF is excellent news; however conscripts (the bulk of the IDF?) have almost no rights to refuse army service. An email I received from the Refuser Network a couple of days ago spoke of an 18 year old facing a prison term of 6 months for his refusal to fight. What’s even more chilling is that the same individual can be repeatedly called up and each refusal to fight may result in a new 6 months sentence.

There are (thank goodness) individuals courageous enough to stand their ground regardless. Hopefully many more Israelis will join them.

  • Let’s make no bones about it. The Zionists aren’t interested in “displacement”, but the extermination of the indigenous Palestinian population, both in the West Bank and Gaza. But the problem for the killers is the increasing resistance from within: from the rapidly growing number of “refusnicks”, who won’t go back to the front line and face imprisonment. There are the young “Refuser Network” who are prepared to go to prison and risk violence, harm and torture, for being anti-war and anti-Zionist. The growing contradictions within Zionist society can be seen with the increasing size and frequency of the “Stop The War” demonstrations in Tel Aviv: the Police thugs are using the same tactics to attack the protesters, with the tried and tested methods honed on years of oppression and torture of Palestinians. This has fuelled the steadfastness and determination of the protesters.

If the North Americans attack Iran, Israel will become a side-show, with the risks of major war in the region, targeting oil refineries, US bases, US supply ships and the likes of ports such as Haifa, will be immediately on the agenda. Whilst the fascists ethnonationalist dream of their utopia, the US could inadvertently shift its gaze to Yemen and Iran, and move the occupation into second place. The cost to the Palestinians is still enormous, but existential factors may quickly alter the geopolitical landscape. The US has little room for manoeuvre, as its failure to stop the poorest country in West Asia from continuing its blockade, has shown. Its dwindling arsenal and shortage of troops may sever the occupations’ lifeline?
