BP’s pipeline helps fuel the Gaza genocide

JVL Introduction

Energy Embargo for Palestine was formed in 2024 to illuminate and interrupt the energy flows fuelling genocide and ecocide in Gaza. UK based, it has focused on the activities of BP, key to the delivery of crude oil to Israel’s refinery in Ashdod. Its first action in March 2024 was to publicise the complicity of the British Museum in its sponsor BPs role in climate collapse and its facilitation of genocide in Israel. The article traces BPs involvement in establishing oil extraction facilities off the coast of Baku in Azerbaijan then transporting crude as ‘the operator and largest shareholder of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline’. Shipped down the Mediterranean this supplies Israel with oil for its jets and tanks. BP, which grew out of the Anglo Persian Oil Company, has had a continuous stake in the imperial geo-politics of the region.

Azerbaijan will be in the spotlight in November 2024 as the host of COP 29. It will be the focus of global protests not just for mocking efforts to curb the extinction of planetary life, but also for being a major supplier of oil for genocidaires in Israel.
