What 1000 days of Gaza genocide looks like
JVL Introduction
Today, July 2nd 2026 marks 1000 days since Israel launched its genocidal attacks, its genocidal rhetoric, while claiming “self-defence” following the Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad attack of October 7th 2023.
A theoretical ceasefire was agreed last October, since when 1,000 people have been killed and bombs continue to fall on tents, “even” in the supposed “safe zone” of Al Mawasi. The Trumpian Board of Peace (sic) has been set up but:
“There are no shared policies or even a shared vision,” analyst Iyad Jouda told Al Jazeera, adding that the board “has deviated from its main purpose”, which is “unifying the Gaza Strip and the West Bank”. The board is also out of money as billions of dollars in pledges have yet to arrive.
In this piece, Al Jazeera sets out some of the impact of these past 1,000 days of genocide, the legacy, the almost unbelievable scale of losses, those killed, those injured and the infrastructure. Somehow the people keep going despite the limited aid getting through; many are determined to live and to provide opportunities for fun, especially for the children.
Israel is willing to talk only of its security; demanding the total disarming of Hamas and yet security for the Palestinians seems not even to be under consideration.
It is appalling and we must make sure that Gaza continues to get the attention it deserves. Barely any rubble has been cleared and medical facilities are strained beyond breaking point while those trying to leave for urgent medical treatment are unable to leave because of conditions of the host countries and/or refusal by Israel to grant the right to exit.
Within the piece I have included a map from UNOCHA; we can see that Israel is occupying more and more of the Gaza Strip. .which notes that there are 2.1 million people in Gaza; before October 7th 2023, there were 2.3 million.
