Why has the destruction of Gaza been allowed?
JVL Introduction
In a powerful statement, Nancy Lindisfarne and Jonathan Neale, ask the question that has puzzled us all: why on earth has the world not stopped the genocide.
By placing it in a global context, they suggest a plausible answer.
Since the financial crisis of 2008-2009, since the austerity imposed thereafter, since the Arab spring, since the climate crisis that is clearly already upon us, the rulers of the world are preparing.
The genocide is not separate from these things but goes in locks step with a pervasive new cruelty towards the weak and needy.
They are trying to teach us that they can do anything – literally anything – and can’t be stopped
They are trying to create a new normal.
They need it to cling to their power, for they have clearly decided not to stop climate change, and the starvation and mass migration that will follow but rather to resist them with as much intolerable cruelty as is necessary.
Those who rule us, suggest Lindisfarne and Neale, actually like “the helplessness and the fear that we, ordinary, common working class people, feel.”
We, in our turn, must not resign ourselves to helplessness but must “hang onto our rage, our grief and our decency”.

I was hoping to find this ‘overblown’.. instead I found it compelling in its bitterness and horror. I shared with a Kurdish friend who said it made him cry. Finding a way to carry on will be the hard task for all of us.
