Israel incarcerates and tortures children without charge

JVL Introduction

This is an important but harrowing read focusing on the experience of Palestinian American Mohammed Ibrahim, aged 16, who was incarcerated and tortured by Israel. He is just one of many young Palestinians so treated. Mohammed was starved, beaten and left with diseases; he feared he would never be freed. The author makes the point that his freedom was almost certainly because of the pressure from international campaigners and we are left wondering what is happening to other young Palestinian prisoners who do not have dual nationality.  The answer is not hard to find; one of the other young prisoners he met in jail, Walid Khalid Abdullah Ahmad, died.  Meanwhile, in the West Bank, Mohammed’s, relative Sayfollah Musallet, just four years older, was murdered by settlers while Mohammed was in  prison.

This article ought to be sent to every politician

NB: Of the 10,914 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons,  only 1,492 are actually serving a sentence (and note the c 98% conviction rate), 420 are “detained”,  2,674 detained as “illegal combatants”, 2,807 detained awaiting conclusion of legal proceedings and 3,521 are held under “administrative detention” ie no charge and not even a semblance of due process. (figures for Sept 2025 see Statistics on Palestinians in Israeli custody B’Tselem)
