Jonathan Cook provides a very helpful overview of the political environment in which the case now before the International Court of Justice is being considered.
The pressures on the Court are enormous. It , says Cook, is on trial as much as Israel.
For the legal facts and the court’s credibility appear to be in direct conflict with western political priorities as expressed so clearly in Biden’s unqualified support for Israel and the UK’s trailing behind him.
It will be fascinating to see how the Court responds to the dilemmas it faces. Will it exonerate Israel and undermine its own credibility? Will it issue an interim injunction and risk incurring the West’s wrath? Or will it seek some legalistic compromise which could risk upsetting everyone!
