Nominate Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi for Labour’s NEC
Local government elections are behind us and the race is now on for Constituency Labour Parties to nominate candidates vying for nine CLP places on the National Executive Committee.
Here’s why CLPs should nominate JVL’s Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi (membership number L0089569).
A general introduction to the importance of the NEC elections and the Grassroots5 candidates, is followed by Naomi’s Candidate Statement.
Every day brings further evidence of how much we need a strong, united left response to crises at home and abroad. Living standards are collapsing, crumbling public services are being carved up for profit, climate catastrophe looms. The Tory government is doubling down on its racist hostile environment and depriving us of hard-won civil liberties. Their latest priority – a law to remove the right to choose not to do business with human rights abusing governments and complicit corporations. What is the Labour leadership response to this disaster of a government? To attack party members on the pretext of “tearing out antisemitism”, to declare “unshakeable support of NATO” and to announce “we are pro business.”
In this emergency, members need strong voices on the NEC to represent socialist values and stand up for freedom of speech and democracy.
That’s why Jewish Voice for Labour is one of nine groups in the party backing the Grassroots5 candidates, including JVL’s media officer Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi. She has won public endorsements (see above and below) from well-known figures including Maxine Peake, Andrew Feinstein and Miriam Margolyes. Diane Abbott MP tweeted support for G5 on May 11.
Make sure your CLP nominates Naomi before the June 17 deadline. Candidates’ formal statements are on the party website. See the text of Naomi’s below this post.
She will be speaking at an online rally called by the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy on Monday May 16 at 7pm.
The other G5 candidates are Jess Barnard, Gemma Bolton, Yasmine Dar and Mish Rahman. All five are supported by the following organisations
Campaign for Labour Party Democracy
Campaign for Socialism
Jewish Voice for Labour
Kashmiris for Labour
Labour Briefing (Co-op)
Labour CND
Labour Women Leading
Northern England Labour Left
Welsh Labour Grassroots

Candidate Statement from Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi
Membership Number L0089569
My purpose on the NEC – to represent grassroots members
Let’s face it – the left in the Labour Party is under existential threat. The policy gains and the process of democratisation under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership are being jettisoned. The response has to be solidarity and unity.
If elected I will work with comrades to re-energise embattled grassroots members, advocating against militarism; for international solidarity with the oppressed; and for collective mobilisation in unions, CLPs and communities where resistance is building against racist threats, crumbling public services and attacks on working conditions.
I will stand firm against proscription of left groupings; defend those unjustly accused; oppose antidemocratic actions by the leadership; and commit to open communication with members.
My experience
Trade union activist since the 1970s; workplace rep in the NUJ and then NUT; vice-chair of Chingford and Woodford Green CLP 2016-20; currently Waltham Forest NEU International Solidarity Officer; Jewish Voice for Labour Media Officer.
I have worked collaboratively with left organisations in the party and unions, defending socialist policies, democracy and members’ right to free speech.
The “Grassroots 5” all deserve our full support.
BUT …
Where is Momentum in the list of supporting organisations ???
Naomi’s election would add an important Jewish socialist voice to the the Labour Party NEC.
100% support Naomi and will encourage our CLP to do so. It is wonderful that she is standing!
