Urgent task for CLP members – Nominate #Grassroots5!
If you were inspired by Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party; if you’re dismayed by his successor’s attacks on members and woeful inability to confront a racist, right wing Tory government; if you’re aghast at the procession of good comrades expelled or leaving the party; make sure your CLP nominates Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi and the other #Grassroots5 candidates before the June 17 deadline. This is our chance to rally around candidates who will work hard on the NEC to hold the leadership to account on behalf of grassroots members.
Many CLPs have already made their nominations for the National Executive Committee, but many more will be doing so in the coming days and weeks. As Jeremy Corbyn says in a video message, it’s vital that grassroots members have strong voices representing them on the party’s governing body.
In order to nominate JVL’s Media Officer, Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi, individual members of CLPs up and down the country need to submit her name and membership number (L0089569) to their CLP secretaries urgently. Likewise for the other G5 candidates – Jessica Barnard of Young Labour (L1204334) and three sitting NEC members Gemma Bolton (L1405940), Yasmine Dar (L1173052) and Mish Rahman (L0137964).
Diane Abbott and Jeremy Corbyn have both Tweeted their support. Naomi has received a number of other impressive endorsements including from Louise Regan (PSC and NEU national officer), Andrew Feinstein, Miriam Margolyes and Maxine Peake.
There are materials to share on the JVL blog. You can help amplify the message by following @Naomi4LabNEC on Twitter and Naomi4NEC on Instagram. You can also reach her by email – [email protected].
Naomi has been an anti-racist campaigner and trade union activist since the 1970s. She has served as a workplace rep in both the NUJ and then NUT. She was vice-chair of Chingford and Woodford Green CLP 2016-20. She is currently Waltham Forest NEU International Solidarity Officer and a member of JVL’s executive committee.
The #Grassroots5 slate for the NEC elections, which includes Naomi, is backed by the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy, JVL, Welsh Labour Grassroots, Campaign for Socialism (Scotland), Labour CND, Kashmiris for Labour, Northern England Labour Left, Labour Briefing (Co-op) and Labour Women Leading. We expect more groups to come on board after nominations close on June 17.
This is the first stage. Once all the nominations are in, we hope members will campaign in their CLPs to get every individual member to vote for Naomi and the rest of the #Grassroots5. Voting will take place between July 8 and August 5.
