On the Jewish New Year we are instructed to seek peace

Dusk tonight brings in the Jewish New Year – Rosh Hashona.  We wish everyone L’shana Tova and note that the period from now until the end of the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur are known as the Days of Awe.  An important time for reflection but also a time when the  Jewish people are required to recommit to the work of tikkun olam, repairing the world. That means striving for peace, including, of course, doing everything in our power to end the Israeli government’s genocide of Palestinians and build a future of freedom and safety for Palestinians and all people.

Jews who support Palestinians need new Institutions

According to the Editor of Jewish Currents, Jews who support Palestinians need to create new institutions to participate in Jewish religious and cultural activities because the Establishment Jewish organisations cannot provide what we need.  Angel argues that this is not a distraction from the vital work of standing in solidarity with Palestinians and opposing the genocide, occupation and siege but is necessary and related.

Privatisation does not work.

Privatisation is yet another area where Starmer’s government is failing to act in the interests and the wishes of the majority of the electorate. Huge dividends and minimal investment. We are told that renationalisation would be too expensive but  this article is clear on the failures and the financial and environmental costs for all of us. This article has valuable information and a staggering graph showing that of the G7 countries, prior to Thatcher’s privatisation the UK had the highest level of public wealth but now has the second lowest.

Jews and Israel are not the same. This Guardian article looks at the USA but is also true of most western governments. The rhetoric of the UK government is not as extreme as that of US leaders, but the result is remarkably similar and, just as in the USA, Jewish Establishment Institutions back Israel even in the face  of the horrors it is meting out in Gaza and in the face of Israel breaking the ceasefire in March this year.
