Starmer’s reverse Midas touch

JVL Introduction

Pretty well everything bad that could happen to Keir Starmer has occurred in a spectacularly short time – and it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving bloke. Who on the left has not enjoyed a delicious sense of schadenfreude watching him reluctantly defenestrate Peter Mandelson – precisely the kind of man Starmer wanted on his team, knowing full well who he was and is.

In this article for Novara Media, Washington-based commentator Joe Guinan catalogues the chickens that have come home to roost in the Downing Street nest, a set of disastrous political commitments based on an inability and unwillingness to address the structural crisis of capitalism.

He concludes: “The only question remaining is whether Farage’s Trumpist Reform party fills the breach in our politics left by Starmerism, or whether a re-emergent actual left – in the shape of Zack Polanski’s eco-populist Greens and the nascent left party of Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana – can get organised in time to prevent this.”
