According to a story broken in the Washington Post on September 15, the Trump administration has informed US Congress of a $2.8bn sale of weapons to Israel, including 20,000 of its devastating 2,000-pound Mk84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 general-purpose bombs. It would be the largest single sale of such munitions in recent years.
The Post says the scale and type of weapons “sets up a potential litmus test for Democrats”. It is also proving controversial among Republicans, including some of Trump’s former far-right MAGA supporters cited in the Al Jazeera article we reproduce below.
Right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson called it “a gift” to an Israeli government which is attempting to exterminate unarmed civilians in Gaza.
The timing of the sale will be welcomed by Netanyahu and his allies, consolidating US military backing for Israel at a time when they may be worrying that a future administration in Washington could be less amenable.
