The Jewish Workers’ Bund – Past, Present and Future

JVL Introduction

In a new short pamphlet, the Jewish Socialists’ Group has collected togther a  fascinating set of articles on the Jewish Workers’ Bund, giving an outline of its history, a number of contributions from active Bund members and various assessments of its contemporary relevance.

The JSG writes in its introduction:

This publication is not an exercise in nostalgia. It is not looking backwards but is opening a door to a precious resource for today and tomorrow, which we are offering to our readers. The Jewish Socialists’ Group has, for many years, been inspired by the Jewish Workers’ Bund in our campaigning, analysis and cultural activities. This has enriched our politics. We hope that these insights, experiences and ideas will strengthen today’s movements against racism and fascism, and for social justice and real equality, and give us all courage in these troubling and challenging times.

  • “wherever we live, that is where we belong”
So true! and it highlights the inherent antisemitism in Zionism which maintains that Jews only ‘belong’ in Israel.

  • “wherever we live, that is where we belong”
Sadly non-Jewish, populations of host (?!) countries do not always display this sentiment. Hence conversions to Christian religions in, for instance, 19th century Germany. Even the family of Moses Mendelssohn – see composer Felix Mendelssohn – felt the need to be baptised.
