The BBC is not providing a public service over Gaza

JVL Introduction

We’ve all been grateful to the BBC for some critical comment or other in its coverage of the war on Gaza.

Don’t be, says Des Freedman. Such moments are the exceptions that prove the rule.

The reality is that Israeli perspectives are constantly privileged.

We see this in the language used by journalists to describe the fate of Israelis and Palestinians.

We see this in its steadfast refusal to raise the issue as to whether what is happening is a genocide (taken as unproblematically so in its coverage of Ukraine).

What has influenced it is the increasing discomfort on the part of Western foreign policy elites embarrassed at the sheer human scale of Israel’s murderous assault on the civilian population of Gaza – and worried about the scale of the street protests this has generated.

But there are constant attempts to delegitimise that with a relentless focus on the violent and the spectacular – the occasional green headband, the lone swastika – and the ever-present accusation that these are antisemitic hate marches.

As Freedman says: “Mainstream media like the BBC will not represent this movement nor hold to account those governments who are complicit in the destruction of Gaza because they are overwhelmingly tied to an imperial world view.”

But by our protest we can help crack open the elite consensus which has dominated for so long and is now fraying at the edges.

The mass of the population, worldwide, is on the side of the Palestinians. Don’t let the elites forget it.

The BBC is not providing a public service over Gaza

The BBC’s coverage of Palestine is regularly marked by an absence of history and context and a tendency to reproduce official Israeli government and military sources.

  • Media workers, students, dock workers and marchers are not enough. Not enough. Short of violence, what more can we do to end this depraved obscenity?

  • Great article and great that JVL are putting it out – the work you’re doing to counter the lies and propaganda is really important. Thanks.

  • I read about things happening in Israel and Gaza on social media – often published by foreign journalists – that I start to doubt because I haven’t seen them reported anywhere in the UK.
This cannot be accidental. If the British mainstream media don’t report an event, then as far as most people in this country are concerned, it hasn’t happened.
I’ve been a journalist for 47 years, and I doubt I have ever been as ashamed about the state of British journalism as I am now.

  • It is well known that the BBC not only takes snap shots and wears blinkers when covering issues about Israeli atrocities, it also studiously and deliberately avoids giving air time to those whom it knows can rip apart any case which Israel uses to defend its terrorising occupation. In this respect, ‘BBC Question Time’ is probably the worst, followed closely by ‘Newsnight’.

  • The striving for ‘balance’ ensures the truth known by millions gets less air time than the lies told by elites. The journalists own lack of knowledge is reinforced by their desire to get access. So many journos have been killed in Gaza and communications so fractured there, it is impossible to meet the needs of a verifiable, comprehensive reportage within the war zone. Then you have the journos own prejducies and desire for advancement or even just to keep their jobs. Guests are wheeled on who know other journos -bound to tow the BBC line. Hostages in Gaza become prisoners in Israel. Israeli hostages include children whereas Palestinian children become teenage boys.
