Possible ceasefire in Lebanon – more bombs for Gaza

JVL Introduction

It seems that Netanyahu no longer aims to make Lebanon face destruction ‘like Gaza’.  That there could be an end to the war in which Israel has killed at least 3,000 Lebanese people, massive displacement and appalling levels of destruction to towns and villages in southern Lebanon and still attacks continuing in the capital Beirut, is to be welcomed but what about Gaza?

As Reuters has reported,  “While diplomacy focuses on Lebanon, Palestinians feel let down by the world after 14 months of conflict which has devastated the Gaza Strip and killed more than 44,000 people.  “It showed Gaza is an orphan, with no support and no mercy from the unjust world,” said Abdel-Ghani, a father of five who only gave a first name.”

The Israeli army is under strain, soldiers are exhausted. some reservists refusing to return to active duty.  Many Israelis who are family and friends to Israeli hostages have been pressing for a deal to end the war and bring their loved ones home,  But “…the prime minister so far shows no signs of seeking a cease-fire and a hostage deal. Instead, he is interested in continuing the long war against Hamas.”   While many Palestinians, especially in Gaza may have hoped Hezbollah would stand firm in solidarity with Gaza, we must hope that a deal with Lebanon shows that a ceasefire is possible. This barbarism must stop.

Lebanon Deal Serves the Interests of Netanyahu, Who Is Showing No Sign of Ending Gaza War

Israel is about to end its skirmish with Hezbollah, leaving the war against Hamas in Gaza as the last major front. But if it ends a war in the north without the total defeat of a more powerful enemy, it can certainly afford to reach a deal in the Strip – and save the lives of those hostages who are still alive

  • Not surprising that the IDF don’t want to continue losing to an army that isn’t Women, Children and ill people, who are armed trained and fighting back. If Israel and the US manage to bombard, murder and blackmail the Puppet regime in Lebanon to try and disarm the only ones defending the country against yet another Israeli invasion it will be a complete joke. The US/UK are supplying the handwringing along with the 2000 lb depleted uranium bombs currently taking out whole apartment blocks in central Beirut.
Despite your claim Hezbollah has definitely NOT been neutered, and the usual persistent lies and spin from the Western media won’t make that true. They are the only defence, and a pause in the bombing while welcome won’t last. Israel and their Western backers want a ‘new Middle East’ that they control.

  • I’m distrustful of what this article and others say about the Lebanon deal and the thinking behind it.

Remember how often the same political representatives of the USA (Biden and Blinken) told us Israel and the Palestinian side had agreed – or nearly agreed- to ceasefire deals in Gaza?

And how the terms of these ceasefire deals gave the USA everything the Biden administration needed to help them politically over the short-term, while doing nothing to stop Israel slaughtering the Palestinians and destroying Gaza?

And how Israel flatly contradicted Blinken’s claims about these deals very shortly after he’d made them? And Hamas politely reminded the world their long-established negotiating position centred on getting a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and a permanent Israeli withdrawal from the whole of the Gaza Strip?

The same process seems to be happening again over Lebanon. The USA is suggesting Lebanon and Hezbollah are about to agree a deal which severely harms them both in return for Israel “pausing” its invasion for however many hours, days or weeks suits itself.
