Palestinians: Victims of ‘cancel culture’

JVL Introduction

‘Cancel culture’ is a term applied almost exclusively to what is said to be the left’s efforts to silence or shame views with which they disagree.

In reality ‘cancel culture’ is nowhere more prevalent than in ongoing efforts to silence Palestinians and their supporters.

The US government consistently ignores Israel’s systematic violations of Palestinian human rights, while calling Palestinians and their supporters antisemites for speaking out against these violations or calling for a non-violent boycott.

Double standards are in evidence, particularly among those who can only see Israeli humanity and do not see Palestinians or Arabs as full human beings.

Denying Palestinians their fundamental right to express pain and to protest, affirms Zogby, is to deny their very humanity.

The reality Zogby describes is North American, but we are familiar with it in Britain and elsewhere.

He stresses the need for respectful conversation among progressives to challenge this dangerous slide toward repression and incivility.
