Out of balance: what has happened to equality law?
JVL Introduction
Geoffrey Bindman has been at the centre of the development of equality law in Britain for over five decades, since becoming a legal advisor to the Race Relations Board in 1966 and then for a while with the Commission for Racial Equality.
In 1974, he established Bindmans LLP as a firm with the aim of “protecting the rights and freedoms of ordinary people”.
In this article, reposted with permission from the New Law Journal, he takes a long hard look at what has happened to equality law in Britain in recent decades, particularly since the CRE was replaced by the EHRC.
He finds it in a parlous state.

It’s all pissing against the wind. This government needs to be on sweet terms with Israel for economic reasons (arms sales) and because a large segment of Britain’s Jews tend to vote conservative – or the tories will try to convince them to. The EHRC if it wants to survive at all, will have to de the government’s bidding. we have long ago stopped living in a free society.
Excellent. Should be in the MSM
Isaac’s work shows no tangible results other than the organisations acquiescence to government thinking and he by his mea culpa letter has exposed himself as an individual taking the easy road where the sack of ethics weighs little.
Very clear – very worrying. Dismantling and degrading an organisation set up to protect equal rights.
This article exposes the hollowing out of the EHRC and illustrates just how dire the situation has become under successive Tory governments. It also gives further proof of the systematic attack on the basic human rights and protections that should be available to people, particularly those in ethnic minorities and how those leading the EHRC have presided over the running down of the service allowing it to be quietly starved into obeyance. This is the modus operandi being broadly used by this government rowing back on fundamental rights aided by the Billionaire owned MSM and a neutered BBC and they are getting bolder, encouraged by the lack of political cost, and openly intervene to get their people into the top positions to avoid criticism or negative publicity. The Trump playbook.
We need to fight these attacks designed to make us weaker by stealth. We should be shouting about this.
Well done and thank you Sir Geoffrey Bindman QC
So much of our civil society is just a husk. Minimal funding, minimal staff. Unable to take action. Merely surviving in name only. Just in my professional experience Charities Commission, Companies House, FCA are all hopelessly allowing rogues to make a mockery of charity law, company law and financial services regulations.
Local authorities are pretending they still have functions which are now unstaffed with unanswered phonelines and ignored emails. Planning enforcement has collapsed.
Its not just the EHRC that is not fit for purpose. Its time for someone to do an investigation and reveal these ghost services for what they are smoke and mirrors.
