Majority without a mandate
JVL Introduction
“A majority without a mandate, and a landslide that isn’t a landslide. ”
An incisive analysis of the general election results by Richard Seymour for New Left Review.
Labour’s offer to the electorate was, he writes, an “insultingly vague manifesto”, positioning itself as it did, as “a safe, managerial option for the establishment”.
The danger is obvious – that this new government with its bloated majority and nothing clear to offer will impose polices unwanted by the majority.
These will leave them worse off, to be preyed on by the populist forces waiting not very far off in the wings, “attuned to the darker side of public passion”.
