Hamas Challenges its UK “Terror” Designation: Franck Magennis in conversation with Jeremy Scahill

Franck Magennis is the barrister presenting the case in a British court to end Hamas’s designation as a ‘terrorist organisation’. Jeremy Scahill interviewed Magennis and between them they expose the shallow and duplicitous case employed by Braverman when Home Secretary, and maintained by Cooper, to make the designation.
It is strongly arguable that Hamas’s military wing which confines its operations to historic mandate Palestine and operating under the international legal right to resist occupation does not qualify for designation. There is no justification for designating Hamas’s political wing; it is the elected government of occupied Palestine and is the civil administration of what remains of Gaza. The strong analogy is with Northern Ireland where the IRA was designated but Sinn Fein was not.
Designation of the political and administrative wings has two major effects. It gives the Israelis free rein to kill anyone linked to Hamas: street cleaners or librarians are equal targets to armed militants. Secondly it makes negotiations to end the killing and reach a position where all can live in safety, Palestinian or Israeli, nigh on impossible. The designation is complicity in sustaining the Israeli murderous fantasy of ‘eliminating Hamas’.

Interesting that the difference between active Hamas militia and the ruling political wing are akin to the IRA and Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland. By conflating the two sides of Hamas Netanyahu and his cronies have ensured demonisation of an entire people. Franck Magennis is a brave man and I shall watch the case with interest and hope.

I have called it a Warrant for Genocide after the book by Norman Cohn on the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion.
By designating Hamas, even its civil wing, as a terrorist organisation, Israel is given a license not merely to kill civilians but to bomb and destroy hospitals and anywhere else where these ‘terrorists’ operate, including of course operating theatres.
This outrageous proscription passed the Palestine solidarity movement by and PSC never had any courage to campaign against it. Today it is clear that this proscription must go.
