From economy of occupation to economy of genocide
JVL Introduction
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 has recently submitted a new report to the 59th session of the Human Rights Council, from 16 June to 11 July.
It is called “From economy of occupation to economy of genocide” and it is uncompromising.
This is the offical summary:
“This report investigates the corporate machinery sustaining Israel’s settler-colonial project of displacement and replacement of the Palestinians in the occupied territory. While political leaders and governments shirk their obligations, far too many corporate entities have profited from Israel’s economy of illegal occupation, apartheid and now, genocide. The complicity exposed by this report is just the tip of the iceberg; ending it will not happen without holding the private sector accountable, including its executives. International law recognizes varying degrees of responsibility – each requiring scrutiny and accountability, particularly in this case, where a people’s self-determination and very existence are at stake. This is a necessary step to end the genocide and dismantle the global system that has allowed it.”
You can also read an Al Jazeera explainer on the report, a Haaretz report on the US response – a decision to place sanctions on Francesca Albanese, a Novara Media interview with her in which she affirms that “The Entire Human Rights System Is in Danger” and a Chris Hedges overview of “the persecution of Francesca Albanese“.

Francesca Albanese, many other of her UN colleagues and some others – eg Michael Sfard – have earned and won humanity’s whole-hearted respect for what they’ve done to deter Israel’s appalling conduct. These people are beacons of light in the darkness. May they prevail.
Essential report . The full report names actual companies – so I have sent that link to my local Camden councillors as further guide to disinvestment! Can other JVL members please do the same with their councils?
