Francesca Albanese, has a cautious welcome for the possibility of the UK ending trade with Israeli settlements and, like us calls on the government to go further. Stopping trade with settlements, all of which are illegal under international law, should have happened decades ago and much more is needed now. In July 2024 the ICJ declared that Israel’s presence in the occupied territories was unlawful and this places an obligation on States ‘not to render aid or assistance’ extends to everything that sustains that unlawful presence as a whole.”
Of course, the Jewish Establishment is not happy and, as noted here, Huckabee (US ambassador to Israel) accused Ed Miliband, who is Jewish, and the British government of ‘Jew hate’! As we have noted on too many occasions, a huge cause of antisemitism is that Israel and the Jewish Establishment in most countries act as though criticism , let alone action, to try to stop Israel’s murdering, maiming and ethnically cleansing Palestinians is antisemitic.
NB There is an error in the article that states that when David Lammy was Foreign Secretary “withdrew most arms export licences in September 2024.”. The government’s own website notes that the UK suspended 30 of 350 arms export licences to Israel. This is around 8%, a long way from “most” licences.
