This timely overview of Fifa’s failure to ban the Israeli football team is published by the Socialist Project in Canada.

Norway’s thrashing of Israel in their encounter on 11th October, followed by their defeat by Italy three days later, has removed the immediate urgency of the call as the Israeli team will not be participating in America in the 2026 World Cup.

Even before their game Norway had made it clear they would rather not be playing it: the Norwegian Football Federation had called for Israel to be sanctioned because it contains players from teams based in the settlements. And the Norway FA announced in advance that it would be donating match profits to Gaza relief fund.

The case for Israel’s exclusion from world football is incontrovertible and pressure must be kept up on Fifa as well as on UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations, to which Israel belongs.

The campaign group Game Over Israel has active, its latest worldwide billboard campaign saying: “Israel is committing genocide. Suspend Israel now. It’s your moral obligation.”

It’s beyond time to show Israel the Red Card…

  • Their country and religion is irrelevant. Last year in Amsterdam they demonstrated yet again what a violent group of football fans they are and all violent groups should be kept away from all our communities.
