Economic sanctions now: the EU is Israel’s largest investor

JVL Introduction

The legal basis for the EU’s trade relations with Israel is the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

Article 2 is explicit:

Relations between the Parties, as well as all the provisions of the Agreement itself, shall be based on respect for human rights and democratic principles, which guides their internal and international policy and constitutes an essential element of this Agreement

Ministers “exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East, starting with a discussion on the humanitarian situation in Gaza”.

Kaja Kallas, President of the Foreign Affairs Council also presented ministers an inventory of different measures that could be taken in relation to the review done in June, so we had a discussion on this and these are choices that the member states have to make. We will keep these options on the table and stand ready to act if Israel does not live up to its pledges.

In other words, they abdicated all responsibility and decided to do nothing…
