Ceasefire? What ceasefire? A devastating report

JVL Introduction

The Guardian introduces the video that follows with these words:

“In the six months since a ceasefire was announced in Gaza, more than 800 civilians have been killed and living conditions have remained dire. Meanwhile, Palestinians in the West Bank face a surge in violence from Israeli settlers and soldiers. While the world’s attention has turned to the war in Iran, is there any end to the suffering in sight?

“Annie Kelly speaks to the Guardian’s chief Middle East correspondent, Emma Graham-Harrison.”

In passing we learn that no Israeli has been indicted for killing a  Palestinians in the West Bank since 2019…

No-one can say they didn’t know. Where are Starmer, Lammy, Cooper and the rest of this Labour government?

Where indeed…

  • The snippet in this piece that hit me really hard was Emma’s statement that a quarter of a million Gazan children face acute malnutrition. Even if they survive, the damage starvation in childhood causes often is lifelong.

What kind of world is it when there isn’t EFFECTIVE GLOBAL ACTION to stop a delinquent state – a member of the UN community of nations – deliberately starving hundreds of thousands of children?

And how come the vast majority of Jewish Israelis (the ones most able to challenge the Netanyahu government without risking savage punishment) aren’t shouting to the rooftops their own disgust and condemnation of this outrage?

A universally accepted responsibility of human adulthood is the obligation to protect children (including the children of strangers). The small groups of Jewish Israelis protesting about the evil actions of the Israeli government fully deserve our respect and gratitude for their bravery … but why are so shamefully few of their compatriots following their lead?
