It is worth noting that it was Peter Oborne who bravely explored the baleful influence of the Israel lobby in a ‘Dispatches’ documentary abot 10 years ago. It is just as telling as the recent Al Jazeera documentaries in unsensationally outlining the then unspoken influence of the Lobby in politics.
Particularly fascinating – in light of The Guardian’s recent policy of denial, omission and commission (see the current article on Jonathan Freedland) – is the interview with that less than ‘august’ journal’s previous editor, Alan Rusbridger. In the footage he outlines how he had been leaned on by the heavy mob representing Israeli interests.
Today, we can fall about laughing at The Grauniad’s charity strap line that it’s reporting can ‘change the story’! How true that now is.
The documentary can still be seen on ‘YouTube’, and is – like this article – a sad reminder of how far the standard of journalism has fallen in the intervening years.
The Guardian has become a rag just a little better than HELLO magazine.
