An excellent analysis by former BBC producer Patrick Howse on how so many journalists are happy to take “official sources” at face value.
He contrasts the responses of Laura Kuenssberg and Emily Maitlis to the Dominic Cummings story.
Kuenssberg’s immediate response was to peddle the line Cummings fed the media, dishonest and disingenuous though it turned out to be. “I’m innocent, guv – there isn’t even a story.”
This is the new journalism.
As Howse puts it: “The truth doesn’t really feature in this process. Today, ‘official sources’ are not satisfied with simply spinning an interpretation of events – they actually just make stuff up; they lie.”
Emily Maitlis told the truth, for which she was reprimanded.
We know whose side we’re on.

During GE 2019 when Tories were under pressure from Little boy on floor in Leeds Hospital,
Emily Maitlis counted how many visits Boris Johnson had made to NHS hospitals compared to JC
And guess what that proved Tories were the party to be trusted with the future of the NHS
I fail to see how these Cockwombles doing there job 6 months after GE and 4 years before next one constitutes anything resembling independent journalism, it does not exist anymore in the MSM and toilet papers
An unlikely half-hero Maitlis as she’s done plenty of half witted side issues to mask the central question in the past … rather than face down / bring out obvious unpleasant difficult conclusions
Interestingly there are two articles on the Emily Maitlis reprimand included in the email linking to this week’s JVL stories. One points out that both Maitlis and Kuenessberg generally reflect the views and priorities of the government. Maitlis made a slight error, thinking that she is allowed to criticise Cummings, because the Mail did. Having read both, I think this is the correct interpretation (from Jonathan Cook), rather than her “bravery”.
Excellent article. As a Jewish Dr on frontline I am battling with BBC to tell them the truth about CV19. Not interested no answers. FACT, ethnic minorities r more inclined to diabetes if they chose a lifestyle of a fatty diet. Diabetes causes serious health issues. Black, White, Blue with spots! Just why do the BBC have selective hearing and why are they only asking ethnic minorities about racism. As a Jewish frontline Dr I live with rude disrespectful ethnic minorities who do not respect woman. Ultimately racism has no place in our NHS, we treat people on need not colour but the BBC/ITV dont tell anything but the fantasies LK dreams up. It is sickening and total bias!
