A Palestinian Christian view: ‘We are used to being ignored’

JVL Introduction

For Khalil Sayegh, a member of the Gaza Strip’s small but ancient Christian community, watching the genocide unfold from Washington DC where he now lives has been a heartbreaking experience. He has lost his father and a sister and is seeing many fellow Christians preparing to leave if they can.

“The majority of the houses in the north, where the Christians lived, have been bombed. Everything is destroyed. People have no reason to stay.”

Not only the Republican Party under Trump, but also the Democratic Party and many US Christians, remain committed defenders of Israel. “We’re used to our brothers and sisters in the West totally ignoring us,” says Sayegh. “It’s not new.”

He refuses to give up hope, putting his energies into advocating for Palestinian liberation:

“A ceasefire in Gaza is not enough,” Sayegh stresses. “That’s putting your goal way too low. The Palestinian struggle is not about a ceasefire – we’re struggling for liberation from occupation, for the decolonisation of the West Bank, the dismantlement of the illegal settlements. That’s our goal.”

  • “A ceasefire in Gaza is not enough,” It certainly is not, but will never be agreed to by Netanyahu as the continuing carnage keeps him in office and out of court and prison. In addition it has been openly declared that the intention of some in the current Knesset is to rid Gaza (and eventually all of the former Palestine) of Palestinians, prior to colonisation, starting with Northern Gaza. Although Palestinians and the land of Palestine do not nor ever existed, in the eyes of the ultra maniacs in the Knesset and IDF zealots. The possible solution is, as has been for a long time, BDS.
