Palestinian Prisoners; where torture is “normal”

JVL Introduction

Nesrine Malik writes with clarity and some despair on the treatment of Palestinians incarcerated by Israel. starting with the inestimable Dr. Hassam Abu Safiya but refering to many others as well. What is perhaps most shocking is how well known this is, how well documented, including, for example by Israel soldiers and, more laudably by Israeli Human Rights organisation BT’Selem.  Despite this, the torture continues and is denied again and again and Israel is still barely subject to meaningful sanctions by any government.

We necessarily repeat that, at least 3,500 of the c 10,000 Palestinians who are held hostage by Israel have not even been tried or gone through any form of due process.  This includes Dr. Safiya himself. Israel stopped using the underground prison where he is now held because it was considered inhumane but it has been re-opened.  To these horrors we can add the fact that the Red Cross are virtually denied access to prisoners despite High Court Ruling

In Israel’s prisons, torture and death have become a norm that it barely tries to hide

The suffering of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya is no isolated case. The abuse of Palestinian detainees is happening in plain sight, yet nothing changes

  • this is a excellent article by nesrine Malik. These days I only buy the G twice a week. Monday because she has her colomn on that that day. The G is at last beginning to allow a alternative view. Of cause, Owen Jones does have a colomn as well. But, I have little sympathy withe present editors who have destroyed a once liberal left paper that I read for 50 yrs since university days.
