Walid Khalidi, renowned Palestinian scholar and historian of Palestine “may be remembered as the diplomatic gentleman-scholar who became one of Palestine’s greatest historians. But he was also a teacher, a leader, and a pioneer whose life was entirely devoted to and consumed by the question of Palestine.”
We somehow missed this article when it was published at the end of January. It discusses the UK National Security Assessment on biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse which was supposed to be published last October.
It only appeared after a Freedom of Information request, apparently significantly “abridged”.
Even so, the report we have, “Global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security: A national security assessment” is devastating in its conclusions.

It has been difficult to keep track of all the threats to protest against government complicity in genocide, war and human rights abuses. This article brings together multiple attempts by the government in the courts and through new legislation to silence our outrage. It discusses the use of anti-terror laws to terrorise protestors; the new forms of repression in the Crime and Policing Bill which grows new fangs as it progresses through Parliament; and the attempts by strident pro-Israel peers to go even further.
We report here on the case that the BBC’s online Middle East editor, Raffi Berg, took against journalist Owen Jones.
Jonathan Cook is severely critical of Berg’s role, as indeed was Owen Jones in his podcast on what he called “civil War” at the BBC.
It is odd, to say the least that someone with such strongly held, publicly-stated, partisan views on Israel and Palestine as Berg’s should have a pivotal role in what is published on the topic. Or perhaps not …

Black voters are rejecting the Labour government more and more. The change to trial by Jury is one of many reasons. the impact on Black communities of Labour policies seems not even to be taken into account, “We are disproportionately stopped and searched, arrested, charged and remanded, we are given longer sentences. Only 1% of judges in England and Wales are Black. So if juries are replaced with judge-only trials, then what happens is overwhelmingly white.”
