A Scottish charity’s income for illegal settlements has skyrocketed

The Jewish National Fund says that “Since its establishment in 1901, KKL-JNF has been developing the Land of Israel, strengthening the bond between the Jewish people and its homeland.” Last year donations to the Scottish branch of the “charity” rose by 1,750%, most of which was passed directly to its Israeli counterpart. The JBF was founded to acquire land for Jewish settlement in 1919 and its work now includes supporting illegal settlement construction. Canada ended its charitable status but the UK offices seem more than reluctant to do the same.

UNRWA under terrible threat: Then there is the devastating impact on the Palestinian people, whose people in Gaza have endured a genocide, who are not yet able to start rebuilding their lives and their infrastructure. UNRWA has long been the key agency supporting the people. We saw what happened when UNRWA were not able to operate in Gaza and a US backed “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation” brought in to distribute food; it led to many people being shot while trying to get the promised food.

Antisemitic attack in London – we need unity

The attack on the ambulances of a Jewish charity in north London has all the signs of being an antisemitic attack and JVL condemns this unequivocally. Some of the responses online, including from those who claim to support Palestinians is worrying. At best this is falling into the trap that Israel and its supporters around the world have laid. The Israeli leadership always conflate Jews with Israel and with zionism as they conflate criticism of Israel’s barbarity with antisemitism. It is essential that we avoid that trap however justified our anger against Israel, it cannot be an excuse for attacks on Jews or Jewish institutions.

Israeli rabbis express shock at West Bank settler ourtrages

Israeli Reform rabbis say: “In the face of these atrocities on the West Bank, we can no longer remain silent. In the face of the lack of action of law-enforcement authorities, we must not keep quiet.”

We wish they had spoken out earlier. We wish the genocide in Gaza brought forth similar condemnation.

But we also recognise their courage in speaking out in a society where popular opinion is rabidly genocideal.

And we can’t but wonder at the pusillanimity of Britain’s rabbinical community, particularly among the liberal and reform rabbis now in the Movement for Progressive Judaism…

Palestinian resilience does not let us off the hook

Palestinian scholars welcome academic interest in Gaza and Palestine more widely but are concerned that a framework that highlights Palestinian resilience can obscure the day to day horrors of the genocide. Does it mean we focus on Palestinians ability to adapt rather than the need to fight to end the suffering and injustice?

to reassure those of us outside Palestine that the Palestinians will pull through and also remove the urgency for action. Is it easy to romanticise suffering rather than to fight for it to stop? “(T)he genocide has rendered words insufficient to convey the horrors that Palestinians in and from Gaza continue to face, and since then any reference to resilience feels like a dehumanizing blow.” “Sumud* is not an expression of joy but of survival”.

New Report: Israel’s Systemic Torture of Palestinians it incarcerates

Francesca Albanese has now reported on systemic torture by Israel of its Palestinian prisoners and calls on the whole world to end this, not least in consideration of the lasting physical and psychological impact of ““Brutal beatings, sexual violence, rape, lethal mistreatment, starvation, and the systematic deprivation of the most basic human conditions” on both those who have been incarcerated and their families. Torture was known to be used before October 7th 2023 but, says Albanese, since then the system of incarceration, including over 3,000 without any charge “has descended into a regime of systemic and widespread humiliation, coercion, and terror”.

Iran, Fossil fuels and capitalism

Capitalism and its insistence on fossil fuels are a prime factor in wars, The dominant role for private profit, however much it is destroying lives and the planet is systemic and must be stopped; as Monbiot says it will not be easy and we have already seen the clamping down of protests especially on two key issues, support for Palestine and to prevent (further) climate change.

The moral high ground that organisations such as the (so called) Campaign Against Antisemitism and the Jewish Labour Movement claimed to occupy has collapsed in the wake of Israel’s war crimes. Having a Jewish leader helps, so does the fact that Zack Polanski is not having to fight his own back office and the majority of MPs. Perhaps even more important is that the Green Party is not apologising for standing up for the rights of Palestinians.
