Israel’s targeting journalists is unprecedented

Israel is killing journalists – it is guilty of “journacide”. It is not only in Gaza, Shireen Abu Akleh was killed in Jenin before October 7th 2023, but more journalists were killed in Gaza since that date “than the total killed in the first world war, the second world war, the Korean War, the Vietnam war, the Yugoslav war of the 1990s and post-2001 war in Afghanistan, all added together. That number was only possible, many agencies have claimed, because the IDF and the Israeli government did nothing to discourage the idea that every journalist in Gaza was an active supporter of Hamas, and therefore an enemy.”

How to bear it: reflections from occupied Palestine

The unbearable is, nonetheless being borne but at a terrible cost. Here the writer, from Bethlehem describes the impact of occupation, siege and genocide on their psychological well being and the numbness needed to survive. The need to shut off from the horrific reality endured by their fellow Palestinians in Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank.  He says ” I inhabit two parallel worlds: one where everything around me is surreal and infuriating, and another where I feel absolutely nothing.”

Israel’s “Opposition” is as responsible as its government

Israel destroys a Tehran synagogue (where is the western media?)

On Tuesday 7th April, Israel bombed Tehran and demolished a synagogue.  The local Jewish community were furious with Israel and were clear that this, among other actions, demonstrated that Israel is not concerned about the well being of Jews.  The Rabbi and a former and current Jewish Member of the Iranian parliament made clear that they do not support Israel and live happily alongside their majority Muslim neighbours. 

Settlement Expansion: under the radar but in plain sight

There are now as many Jewish Israelis living in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as Palestinians ethnically cleansed from Palestine during the 1947-49 Nakba.  Israel continues to increase the number of settlements, the number of homes on each settlement and to recognise more and more of the outposts in the West Bank. All settlements in occupied territory are illegal under International Law and the outposts are illegal even under Israeli laws. On April 1st, “Israel’s cabinet has quietly approved the construction of 34 new illegal settlements across the occupied West Bank, according to an April 9 report by i24 News, in what the Israeli outlet described as “the largest single approval of outposts in one step.”

Hollow Oscar

A year ago Basel Adra, No Other Land, won an Oscar for a documentary about life under Israeli occupation in Tuwani and the larger region of Masafer Yatta.

As Basel’s brother Adam writes: “By revealing on the big screen the daily violence, humiliations, and injustices faced by our community, we thought we might have a hand in getting the world to do something. But to our dismay, nothing has changed, and the violence has not disappeared.”

Israel’s new execution law is a new stage in its genocide of Palestinians

Global Jews for Palestine, to which JVL belongs, has issued this statement on Israel’s apartheid execution law and demand that: Western governments must impose severe sanctions immediately! The UK government, like far too many others seem to think that “tut tutting” on this terrible law as on Israel’s many violations of international humanitarian law, such as the occupation, the genocide, settler violence and much more is enough. It is not.  The demand for sanctions is reasonable and justified.  The government has applied sanctions on Russia, for example but not on Israel. It is long past time.

Israel’s obsession with Lebanon’s Litani river

There is a settler movement in Israel called Uri Tzafon. Its vision?

“What is ‘south Lebanon’ actually? It is simply the Northern Galilee. The clear natural border between Israel and the Lebanon Mountains runs along the Litani River, Lebanon’s greatest river, an area about which Moses said: ‘a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills.'”

If God didn’t mention the Litani as ours in the Bible he should have!
