Israel is not winning: reasons for cautious optimism

The arc of history is no longer going Israel’s way asserts Dr. Ramzy Baroud who argues that a ceasefire has been forced on Israel – and, indeed the USA. He looks at Israel’s historic wars and the costs and notes that Israel’s military might is not succeeding in crushing its opponents and now it is becoming harder for Israel to separate out conflicts, not least because Iran refuses to concur with this and has demanded that there is a ceasefire in Lebanon and that the Palestinian situation needs to be resolved.

Climate change: more important but worrying news

Belching greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere through fossil fuel use and animal farming is disrupting the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (the AMOC), which brings us the Gulf Stream and a temperate climate. Without it, winter temperatures will plunge to be followed by summer droughts. Damian Carrington reports here for the Guardian, on the more than 50% likelihood of the AMOC reaching a tipping point by mid-century, so that its functions will then inevitably cease by the end of the century. This would  dramatically upset of the delicate balance of life on earth.  

Fewer and fewer rights to protest

Two days ago (on 14th April 2026) Parliament voted to further restrict the right to protest.  This has not been covered by the legacy media and should have been big news.  Fortunately the Quakers have issued this brief report voicing their concerns, already raised through a letter signed by many faith leaders and others.

A devastating new report about sexual violence meted out to Palestinian prisoners by Israeli soldiers was released on 12th April 2026 adding to previous testimony, eg from BT’Selem and the Special Rapporteur for Palestine, Francesca Albanese. “The report highlights that the Israeli torture system deliberately widens the circle of harm through a strategy of “psychological warfare” that exploits the high value placed on “dignity” and “privacy” in Palestinian collective consciousness, turning them from protective norms into instruments of coercion. Instead of society functioning as a protective space, victims are led to believe that disclosing sexual abuse would constitute a second violation of their privacy and their family’s reputation. This fosters a cycle of emotional isolation that discourages reporting or seeking assistance for fear of further compromising their personal and familial dignity, already eroded by the torture.

A threat to the right to protest affects us all

JVL Executive member Jonathan Rosenhead was the oldest person to be arrested at the Lift the Ban protest in London’s Trafalgar Square on Saturday 11th April. Here he outlines the dangers of the UK government’s proposals to limit our right to protest even more.  There are two particularly pernicious changes being proposed: cumulative disruption” and prohibition “in the vicinity of places of worship”. 

The terrible risks of speaking the truth about genocide

In this interview we learn more of the pressures she and her family face, her sources of inspiration, her determination to continue as she feels she has no other choice. The attacks and threats to Ms Albanese are an extreme example of the repression on free speech on Palestine (and Israel) that are widely applied.  The risks most of us face are considerably less than hers but our commitment must be the same and we can take inspiration from her stand and her determination.
