Cautiously hopeful about the fate of the Zionist lobby

The Jewish Establishment across the world and the Zionist Lobby, especially the Christian Zionists, continue to support Israel and to limit criticism – if any – of the actions of the State. However, their grip is loosening, on the Jewish community and on all decision makers.

This article is about the collapse in support for Israel in the USA and especially the rejection of Zionism by more and more young Jews. But the extent of Israel’s actions is creating opposition in more and more countries, sometimes those we would least expect.  Now far right Georgia Meloni in Italy has posted this (on X) “I accuse Israel of crossing the red line. I condemn the massacre of Palestinian civilians and I announce that Italy will SUPPORT European sanctions against Israel”.  Belgium has stopped UK arms passing through its territory from reaching Israel,  Spain has taken several concrete measures, including an arms embargo against Israel and even the likes of Tucker Carlson is clear about the difference between antisemitism and antizionism, while France has rejected the proposed “Yadan Law”  and their largest ever petition.  with over 1,000,000 signatures, called for the end of the EU-Israel trade agreement; and greater numbers of Israelis are protesting Israel’s permanent warfare.

Astonishingly even the President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews has reached a limit and while there is still nothing from them about the genocide in Gaza, the attacks on Lebanon and Iran, let alone more broadly supporting Israel, this week he has issued this message to Israel: “To the Israeli government, to the opposition, to civil society — our message is: do better. Do a lot better. We cannot defend the indefensible. We will not defend the indefensible. What we have seen in the West Bank, and this discriminatory death penalty, is unacceptable. We will not defend it.” (see Jewish News article)

And in the very “belly of the beast”, the USA, there is diminishing support for the close alliance with Israel. As this article puts it: “It’s going to take a while. But the Israel lobby is starting to break up.”
