Young people stand up against Israel’s pulverisation of Gaza
JVL Introduction
The bombardment of Gaza has a deeply affected young people, resulting in a number of school strikes to express support for Palestinians. This opinion piece focuses on action and reaction in Luton but school (and University) students have been in action in many UK cities and throughout the world.
Young Muslim people are especially moved to action partly because so many in Gaza are themselves Muslim and also because of how they are targeted under the UK’s Prevent progamme. Most schools and colleges use the highly flawed IHRA working “definition” as their framework for addressing antisemitism.
The action may lead to young people being labelled “radicalised” or antisemitic; in Luton students want education on the issues but while we would welcome antisemitism being addressed, young people deserve better than such education being run by those who happily conflate antisemitism with antizionism. Palestinians need that too.
