JVL Introduction
The opening paragraph of this report by Stanley Heller in New Politics says all we wish to say by way of introduction:
- “They may not call themselves anti-Zionists, but the newest poll numbers show that a quarter of U.S. Jews fundamentally oppose the Zionist project. They reject the Zionist movement’s goals for Jews to take over the land of Palestine and to make the resulting country a Jewish-supremacist state. American Jews are becoming less inward looking, less white, less religious, and thus increasingly different politically than Israeli Jews. That’s all to the good.”

‘Jews are turning more democratic and critical of Zionist practices while the trend in Israel is the reverse, with young people moving to the fascist right’
What a surprise.Hmmmmm wasn’t it JVL that scolded me for using the word fascism in a comment some time ago…I wonder who was right!
I think it is probably true that in the USA and elsewhere there are more Christian Zionists than Jewish Zionists. Could this be because the racism of Zionism appeals to those Christians with right wing views of which there are many as witnessed by their support for Trump in the USA and Tommy Robinson here in the UK? On the other hand, many Jews have realised that Zionism and its implementation in Israel is completely against the ethics and teaching of Judaism.
Let us be honest. The US and US Jews are far more important in the Middle East/world geopolitical balance than we in the ex-world hegemon are. “Lost an empire and not yet found a role” (Dean Rusk, writing about the British state.). But still searching for one in a manner that is pathetic. I’m afraid this applies to much of the LP, too. Internationalism is a people-to-people struggle, not a matter of Realpolitik. So we welcome Heller’s good news, and deprecate the extreme-right evangelical bedfellows of Zionists – including those of the “100% Zionist – no ifs, no buts” persuasion.
