Unions opposed to complicity with Israel’s crimes

Several Trade Unions called for the exclusion on a shortlist to build ScotRail’s new trains of a company that operates the Jerusalem Light Rail system that is actively expanding into the illegal West Bank settlements. However they have now been included this company leading to an angry exchange between ASLEF organiser and ScotRail. The Scottish government has recently passed a motion in support of BDS and seem to be reneging at the first hurdle. The ASLEF organiser wrote: “Tragically and disappointingly you have confirmed that you are still prepared to give Scottish public money to a company profiting from the misery and oppression of the Palestinian people.”
What is the point of fine words without the action that must logically follow. We must await the follow up from the UK government planned sanctions on illegal settlements . With the annexation of the WEst Bank – and the promised Gazafication that has already started, there is no time to lose to end public money going to support the Israeli regime in any way.
We are glad to see the Union support and now need the government to show the same mettle.

Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles [CAF] is a Spanish publicly listed company which manufactures railway vehicles and equipment for many countries, including the UK and Ireland. Wikipedia reports “In 2019, CAF was referred to Spain’s OECD National Contact Point for a violation of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct. As part of the ‘TransJerusalem J-Net’ consortium with Israeli company Shapir Engineering and Industry, who are on the United Nations Human Rights Council list of companies that benefit from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.”
It will take a major international effort to undermine this project.
