Repression of free speech and right to assembly in Israel

JVL Introduction

Standing Together is a grassroots movement mobilizing Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel in pursuit of peace, equality, and social and climate justice.

In a newsletter on 11th January it reports on the repression it is currently facing with the banning of its rally under the slogan “Only peace will bring security”.

At the last minute, the police canceled our rally for peace tonight. That’s outrageous!

The Israeli police, under clear orders from the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, notified us that they decided to cancel our approval for our march for peace this evening in Tel Aviv! We are not giving up. We will submit an appeal to the High Court and spread this message across the country in preparation for an even bigger rally next week.

We organized this rally with a coalition of 23 organizations fighting for peace, under the heading “Only peace will bring security” and the police claimed that the demonstration could harm public order and may lead to violence. Even a statement as simple as that is now viewed as too provocative. A government that cannot recognize that only peace will bring us security is a government that will never keep its citizens safe.

The rise of fascism in our society is terrifying, and it is directly harming our ability to speak out and demonstrate. We simply must not let this government win. Our futures here depend on it.

Raise your voice, continue to speak out against this war, and call for a ceasefire agreement to bring back the hostages alive and save the lives of innocent people in Gaza. Join us in our call for Israeli-Palestinian peace, to build a future in which all of us can live with equality, freedom, safety, and peace.
