Israel’s forthcoming elections: no change for Palestinians
JVL Introduction
There are many people, including those who generally support Israel, who are appalled at what the current Israeli government has been doing – and continues to do – to Palestinians, many of whom also have serious questions about Israel’s attacks on Iran and Lebanon. Some are anxiously and hopefully waiting for the forthcoming elections for this government to be voted out. Here Gideon Levy makes clear that placing one’s hope in opposition parties is pointless as the narrative of right wing Zionists and “left wing” zionists carry the same narrative whereby Israelis are humanised, are victims and Palestinians are terrorists.
After another settler attack in Tell Village close to Nablus on Friday 24th July resulted in four Palestinians and two Israelis being killed, this was the message from Yair Golan who is the head of what Levy says is ‘the most left-wing, pro-peace party’: “Terror must be defeated with a strong military arm, with determination and without compromise.” This is virtually the same message as that from Netanyahu.
An Israeli soldier’s mother is quoted in this article, shocked by the lack of resistance but her son explains how impossible that is. This reality is a reminder that this is up to all of us to fight for the necessary change to bring peace to all and justice and freedom to Palestinians.
