Israel/Palestine: Facebook censors discussion of rights issues

JVL Introduction

In this report published early in October, Human Rights Watch revealed how Facebook removed content which Palestinians and their supporters had posted about human rights abuses during hostilities in May this year.

The Facebook Oversight Board made recommendations for an independent investigation into content moderation and an update by Reuters on 3rd November reports that Facebook said it would implement recommendations from that review,.

The devil will be in the detail and we await developments with interest if not too much optimism.

  • A thoroughly frightening picture showing how powerful actors can shape the WORLD’s thinking without most of us being aware they’ve done so. And Israel is only a middle-size nation (though currently backed by the globe’s wealthiest super-power).

I wonder how the USA and China influence the flow of information at Facebook?

  • I do not do any social media. I am wary of it. It can be seen that Facebook is a media better avoided. Facebook is now controlling the agenda.

It is too similar to how the Guardian and other establishment newspapers control content, with curtailed rights of reply and selection policies for readers’ letters – which do not get published if they are considered to be fashionably incorrect.

  • We all know that it amounts to censorship due to bias. I posted a video which was taken by an Israeli soldier, it showed a soldier firing a rifle with a telescopic sight, the bullet blew the side of a young boys head off, killing him instantly, the soldiers all started cheering and slapping the soldier on the back.
I wrote, Isn’t it a shame that some Israeli children are brought up to believe that Palestinians were less than vermin. I was suspended for 30 days, Facebook said it was because I had said, Palestinians were less than vermin. The only options they gave me was do you agree with with our action? I said no.
That was it, I could not give my reason for disagreeing.
