Israel developing AI tool to track “every person in the West Bank”

Since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza, an elite eavesdropping agency, Unit 8200, has been using mass surveillance of communications between Palestinians to develop a powerful artificial intelligence tool similar to ChatGPT, potentially enabling it “to know what every person in the West Bank is doing.”
An investigation by the Guardian, jointly with Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine and Hebrew-language outlet Local Call, found that Unit 8200 trained its AI model “to understand spoken Arabic using large volumes of telephone conversations and text messages.”
It quoted a Human Rights Watch surveillance investigator saying this was “invasive and incompatible with human rights,” adding: “We’re talking about highly personal data taken from people who are not suspected of a crime, being used to train a tool that could then help establish suspicion.”
