I am struck, when looking in fear at the homicidal ravings of the Israeli TV host, by their strong resemblance to things that the enraged US political class were saying in 2001 after 9/11. And this wasn’t just the neocons – in particularly I remember James Rubin almost foaming at the mouth as he spat put threats of vengeance.
How did it happen? How is it possible to complain on the one hand that your people has faced the most horrendous suffering at the hands of demagogues and dictators and that every effort must be made to ensure that such evil does not happen again; but then, on the other, to deliberately impose horrendous suffering on another people in full consciousness, but completely careless, of that suffering? How can you complain of being the victim of a great injustice and use that as the reason to commit injustices of your own? When did Jews who cannot forget their ancestors who were murdered in their millions for no sane reason come to believe that murder was a weapon they could use ? How does the human mind bear these contradictions?
