Cable Street 90 years on: a marvellous and important commemoration

JVL Introduction

Here are two reports from the Morning Star on the tremendous march and rally to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. The first highlights broad lessons for today and below that is one that takes the historic event and links this to what needs to be done to confront the ongoing sectarianism in Northern Ireland.

I will steal a bit from words that David Rosenberg’s posted on Facebook about the event. David was one of the key organisers of the march and has long been involved in remembering the events of 1936, incorporating them into many of his hostory walks.  He shows the importance of remembering the working class heroes of the period but also, importantly recognising which communities have been under attack since and are currently under attack.  The lessons of unity, that the working class Jews, Irish dockers, Trade Unionists and many others found in 1936 is one we must learn for today.

This is from David’s post: “Such a vibrant and positive atmosphere at the Cable Street 90 march this afternoon – marching bands at both ends. The Great Yiddish Parade near the front, the RMT brass band in the trade union bloc further back. It was multicultural and multi-generational. Large Jewish bloc.
Through placards and speeches you felt there was proper respect paid to the generation that fought and won against fascism in the East End, and the later struggles of the Bangladeshi communities from the 1970s onwards were well represented.
Great speeches – probably invidious to pick some out especially but those from Declan Kearney (Sinn Fein), Apsana Begum, Rajonuddin Jalal, Eddie Dempsey, Harsev Bains (Indian Workers Association), Julia Bard from JSG, and Kevin Courtney, and the moving speeches of four Jewish speakers about their family members there in Cable Street in 1936.”
