1967: the future foretold
JVL Introduction
Six years ago Haaretz published an article harking back to 1967 and the different futures foretold in two letter which coincidentally were published on the same day that year.
One exulted: “We are hereby committed faithfully to the wholeness of our land, in regard to the Jewish people’s past and to its future alike, and no government in Israel shall ever forgo this wholeness.”
The other, by the Israeli socialist organisation Matzpen, was only 52 words long. Amonng its 12 signatories was one Moshé Machover.
It was clear that “Our right to defend ourselves against annihilation does not grant us the right to oppress others” and ended with the words “Let us leave the occupied territories now.”

Heart so heavy, but encouraged by this excellent piece. It took me a decade from first ‘political engagement’ in 1970s to eschew the relentless propaganda spewed out by the BBC/MSM with respect to Israel/Palestine, only to be dogged by its still-relentless presence to this very day. I still make it my business to present what I believe is the only solution, aptly proposed here; that of the rejection of ‘exceptionalism’, so favoured by ‘states’ whose putative existence is predicated on that silliest of notions. I have been attacked, even by my own family and ‘friends’, but, as everyone knows, that is an insignificant price to pay.
