Another cautious welcome for Miliband’s sanctions

While Ghada Karmi considers that there is much to criticise in the recent announcement by the Foreign Secretary on Palestine; she notes that this is still significant and that “(f)or the first time, it calls Israel’s assaults on the occupied West Bank ethnic cleansing by name, and accepts without prevarication the International Court of Justice’s ruling that Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories is illegal.”
And: “Unlike past rhetorical statements, these assertions are backed by action.”
She also notes the importance of the movement in pushing the government to take action and it will be the movement that will keep pushing for more. The planned action is focused on settlements and more needs to be done to make the difference needed for Gaza. However, as Francesca Albanese said, it does mark a “seismic change”.
Now what is needed is Palestinian leadership and unity.
