Islamophobia in the UK 2 – it is intensifying

Islamophoba is on the rise and not only in the UK.  Politicians’ rhetoric and actions too often marginalise and discriminate against Muslim people and the genocide in Gaza has been followed by further escalation.  In the UK, there is ample evidence of, for example, disproportionate targeting of Muslim people by the Prevent programme and a further significant rise following the ghastly murder of three girls in Southport at the end of July this year.

This article highlights some of the findings of research by the Runnymede Trust, whose Chief Executive, Shabna Begum, said “The way politicians talk about Muslims now is so derogatory, it’s in the most brutally divisive terms,”.  She also said that there was a “real reluctance to use the term Islamophobia… because no one wants to be seen to defend Muslims”…

New report reveals hate crimes against Muslims intensifying across UK

Over the last year, 38% of all religious hate crimes recorded by police were against Muslims, the report found, also recording a spike in Islamophobic rhetoric.
