Climate movement activists in solidarity with Palestine

JVL Introduction

We are reprinting this open letter from a coalition of environment groups which form part of the movement to limit global climate catastrophes. It argues that the economic and geopolitical forces propelling us towards the extinction of life on Earth also perpetuate the occupation in Palestine and the colonisation of Palestinians. It calls for an end to military aid to Israel and a recognition of the contribution of weapons manufacture and use to carbon emissions. It emphasises the role in the Israel/Palestinian conflict of gas exploration off the Gaza coast.

Ten licenses were handed to fossil fuel companies at the end of October 2023, after the conflict had started: one was to BP, now the subject of repeated protests organised by Fossil Free London, for its complicity in these war crimes. The letter ends with a reminder of the massive colonial debt owed to the indigenous peoples of the US, Central and Latin America by those who occupy Turtle Island and Abya Yala.
