Environmental collapse: Starmer against activists not polluters!

JVL Introduction

After less than six months the Labour government is becoming more and more unpopular as it does less and less in the interests of ordinary people and less and less that shows a commitment to a sustainable future. Here Jeremy Corbyn writes about Starmer & Co’s appalling record on the environment; they have ditched the  Green New Deal preferring an expensive – and near useless – carbon capture scheme, which will allow fossil fuel extraction to continue apace. (You can read George Monbiot on why this is a  terrible and costly mistake here.)

Further as Corbyn says here: “This government is not just failing to stand up to fossil fuel giants. It is failing to confront the economic system that empowers them. The richest 1% are responsible for more carbon emissions than the poorest 66%, yet our government still refuses to bring in wealth taxes to reduce inequality”

While the government is failing there is one area where the “UK is a global leader: cracking down on climate activism. British police arrest environmental protesters at nearly three times the global average …”

The facts about a planet facing climate disaster are clear. Why won’t this Labour government face them?

Labour seems gripped by a form of denialism. The danger is real and incremental change won’t avert it

  • Thank you, Jeremy. The party leadership may have pushed you aside and completely ignore what the rest of us think, but you are still one of the very best political thinkers and leaders that we have. Your message is crucial. Please keep campaigning and writing!!!

  • The present political leadership in the West seems to be in the grip of a fatalistic insanity Where do they think they and their families are going to live?
If Jeremy starts a new party next year. I shall be one of the first to join. We need to give power to the few sane voices who can represent us. Will we though?🤷

  • Thank you for your superb writing, Jeremy. Thank you JVL for passing it on.

The climate emergency is by far the most vital subject for urgent action. All sorts of disastrous consequences are already happening. It will get worse.

The Starmer-led government, which is in place only because of the failure of the previous Conservative government, is absolutely hopeless all round. It has no useful strategies to mitigate the oncoming climate disaster. Many of this phoney ‘Labour’ government’s policies are counterproductive.

Sir Keir Starmer is worse than useless. His focus is woefully limited. Keir Starmer’s objectives are to grab votes by any means and to take funding, inclusive of luxuries for himself and his wife, from self-interested sources which are of course inevitably against the common good of our country.

I am an eighty year old retired design enginer. It is obvious to me that lots of non fuel burning energy generation needs to be urgently installed, now, together with the essential additional electrical transmission to go with it. This is just one obvious part of tackling the problem. But, also, much of what is presently considered normal activity is counterproductive. Perception of the oncoming disaster needs to radically change amongst lots of people.

Many attitudes seem to be uninformed and self-centred. Much of this is due to the predominance of selfish and ignorant establishment politicians and the accompanying establishment media with its regular avoidance of truth.

Thank you again Jeremy Corbyn for being an honest politician and for your intelligent understanding. You are the sort of leader which we should have.

  • It is important to remember also that Starmer’s government celebrates nuclear weapons and opposes nuclear disarmament. This is not compatible with our survival either.

But we can change this and we must.

Please, therefore, ask your MP to sign Jeremy Corbyn’s Early Day Motion on this subject:
