Jewish teachings tell us to welcome the stranger

Jewish Voice for Labour strongly condemns Starmer’s recent speech on immigration. While giving a passing nod to those from the Caribbean and South Asia who helped to build the country after World War Two, Starmer promises massive curbs on immigration. He claims that continuing immigration at current levels would risk Britain becoming an “island of strangers”.  This is aping Reform and the right wing of the Conservative Party – and echoes the racist rhetoric of Enoch Powell’s ‘rivers of blood’ speech. No previous Labour leader has sunk so low.

Starmer’s speech also illustrates his inability to tackle the issues which matter – the rising cost of living, the deterioration of our public services or the shortage of housing.  None of these have anything to do with immigration. The failure to invest in public services and to create new homes for all is a failure of successive governments – as is the failure to invest properly in apprenticeships and training for people who live in this country. Instead of providing ways to address these issues, Starmer follows the route of scapegoating immigrants, adding more fuel to the fire that has been stoked by Reform.

These appalling remarks come in the wake of reduced international aid spending. The proposed restrictions take no account of the remittances sent home by foreign workers to their relatives trying to survive in countries which are still reeling from the colonial past.

As Jews, we are all descended from immigrants, most of whom were unable to speak English when they arrived.  Like more recent immigrants, they worked hard and made a contribution, often becoming within a generation or two the workers, doctors, nurses, teachers who are so needed today.

We call on Starmer to retract his words and his policy and to work to unite the community – not further divide it.  He says he values the contribution immigrants have made but speaks without even considering the impact on people from those communities. Shame on him!

  • When you think Starmer can’t get any worse …. he somehow manages it

It’s difficult to believe that anyone ever joined the Labour Party in the hope that the leader would echo the words of Enoch Powell. It’s also worth remembering that Powell’s speech got him kicked out of the heath Cabinet.

  • There is nothing freaky about Jewish Voice for Labour’s stance. It is firmly in line with the teaching of Moses, which is also what Pope Francis was preaching. It is the disgrace of so many present day politicians that they are supporting policies that could lead to the end of our world, the annihilation ofmost of its people and the supremacy of those who don’t care and are worshipping the god called “Money”

  • Your publication does brilliant work raising awareness in accessible ways about the most crucial issues of our time. It’s so important because I fear a repeat of 1930s Germany. Already on your mailing list so I don’t need adding again

  • We of jewish heritage have to understand that “Popularism” is sweeping the USA and Europe. Lip service has to be given by our leaders if we are not to be swept away. My own brother (orthodox) said “There are too many dam foreigners in this country”. I replied we are dam foreigners. He said”Yes, but we are white!!”. Enoch Powell (who I met), a St Andrews man, his speech in full was not as incendiary as reported. Immigration will be used to empower the ignorant, and the stupid – alas the majority.

  • It’s sickening but not surprising. He’s always been weak, fake and dishonest.
I feel I’ve lost all hope.

  • And isn’t telling truth to power an important of Judaism too? That’s what I understand the Prophets did (however little their own national leaders – aka “kings” – liked it).

A hopeful bit of news from “Haaretz” today … Tel Aviv and Hebrew universities are hosting Nakba memorial events and haven’t (yet?) backed down in spite of the Israeli government’s attempts to punish them by stopping their funding. Maybe today’s “prophets” include (some) Israeli academics and (some) Israeli students.

  • Most immigrants work hard and very often their children continue and become doctors or nurses.
