He is very good. Always very articulate and clear. (Varoufakis was only Greek Finance Minister for about 9 months) He is often provocative and always tries to speak truth. He is wrong on Hamas. He is right about Government playing games. Did he forget to say Netanyahu facilitated Hamas’s rule in that Netanyahu attempted to undermine Gaza’s political rulers by facilitating funding, and ensure there is no two state solution. Varoufakis will never be a diplomat but he is completely right about Von De Leyen. I do think religious history and politics of the Arab states has also a role in this as well, of course, British imperialism, a history of pogroms in Eastern Europe, antisemitism and demonstrable hatred of Jew and an Islamophobia and hatred of Arab and Ottoman going back to the crusades, plus a history of barbary pirates, is in the mix in this long and violent history. Many Jews in Israel believe they are the chosen people and that Palestinians are animals. This sounds more like a fascist cult. In our guilt strewn history, we Europeans played our part. But where is our influence now ? To know this people have to recognise this and people have to admit this, In Germany that is having the effect of a one sided response, How can we on the left who see far more clearly than many on the right, keep up the pressure to end this barbarous massacre of Palestinians? Will Hamas ever be destroyed Surely they will rise again in a different form. Is it that there is no solution to be had for the Palestinians? Who knows? But I do not believe Israel will ever be seen with the same blind eyes again.
brilliant perhaps Yanis could go on Talk so called Radio and have a chat to piers Morgan … I guess morgan would not dare. He would not get away with trying to shout people down with do you support Hamas a terriost organisation
Can you print out His speech?
I am afraid we do not have the capacity to transcribe his speech. Sorry.
@ Rosie
I think Netanyahu’s allies haven’t taken into account the changes in communication technology which allow us to SEE directly the horrendous mistreatment of ordinary people (“like us”) in Gaza. What we see we will not forgive.
I think I’ll never forget one premature baby’s desperate wheezes for breath when his / her incubator in ICU didn’t work any longer because Israel stopped fuel deliveries to hospitals as well as other essential civilian infrastructure. My sister-in-law (now with adult children of her own) was a premature baby as small as that infant Gazan. Given half a chance that baby could have survived. I doubt whether it did.
The Jewish State does not exist for the very simple reason Jews could not commit Genocide, Apartheid or Crimes against Humanity, they could never do this to another people
Israel is the biggest threat to the Jewish Community the world over, the biggest driver of Anti Semitism
Democracy has been bought and paid for by the Israel lobby, the Yanks and the Banks
Until the Judiciary and Courts bring the individuals behind the corruption to justice then innocents will continue to be slaughtered
He definitely has a wide knowledge of history and how the Extreme Right create and use scapegoats, making them the enemy. I enjoy listening to him on many subjects.
For me, what needs breaking is the influence of the Israeli Lobby but I cannot see how this is likely to happen.
Israel has the support of the US which sees it as its own Middle East, Fully Armed Military Base, its why it funds it with $billions every year. The US also dominates European Countries, especially the UK and at present Germany, after the US blew up the Nordstream Pipelines, Germany’s Manufacturing verged on collapsing through a lack of Energy (Gas), its now importing Liquid Gas from other Countries like Peru, which the US almost certainly controls, so Germany dare not step out of line. All these factors play a part in the excessive power of Israel, it literally does whatever it likes, knowing nothing negative will happen. We should be able to turn to the UN but again the influence of the US is again a major factor in any decisions that it takes.
Look what happened when the UK, was likely to vote in a Politician that wanted to change the Status Quo, make peace by diplomacy instead of always reverting to use wars, to bring some equality between Nations etc etc!!!
For me the only light on the horizon is BRICS, it Trades without using threats like, Trade Sanctions, Coups to get Leadership change and if that doesn’t work, it won’t resort to creating Wars or actually going to War. If BRICS is successful and it has all the potential, the US could be forced to change its policies.
Varoufakis has a lot of good things to say about the political direction of travel.
It is probably not helpful to refer to western Jews as if they were ‘non-white’ – there are all sorts of Jews.
In fact the new fascist right is piggy-backing its prejudiced agenda upon notions of Israel/Jews white vs Palestinians/Muslim non-white – which is wrong on all sorts of levels.
And probably his historical depiction of western anti-Semitism could be a bit more nuance but hey it is not a academic lecture.
